How Tiger will conquer the old course

World number one Tiger Woods has revealed what strategy he believes is key to winning the Open Championship at St Andrews this week.

Woods enters the third major of the year on the back of some uninspiring performances by his own high standards, but has a gameplan he believes will help him lift his fourth Claret Jug.

“You have to be able to control your trajectory more than the other three majors we play,” he said. “This golf course requires placement, you really have to place the ball correctly. Just because it’s wide off the tee doesn’t mean you can blow it all over the place. I’ve managed to do that in the past.”

Woods was also complimentary of how the Old Course has stood the test of time over the years. “I think it’s the angles [of the holes] and the wind. On a calm day, you feel like you could shoot a 65 but when the wind blows, like it did on Sunday, the leader might be 80.”

Woods will be looking to overcome the putting woes he’s experienced in the last few events on the PGA Tour with the help of his new Nike putter, in the bag for the first time this week.

Woods tees off at 9.09am on Thursday with favoured contender Justin Rose.
