Ask the experts: Maureen Madill

We ask four members of the BBC commentary team to offer their insight on this year’s Open Championship.

How does Royal Lytham differ from other courses on the Open rota?

It is special. It may lack the grandeur of a Turnberry, but when you’re playing you don’t notice the surroundings; it just envelops you. It surprises me every time. Before I arrive, I think ‘Ah Lytham, a bit dull,’ but when I come off I think, ‘Ooh Lytham, lovely”.

What is the key to winning at Lytham?

You have to be a strategist and a fair bit of flair as you are going to come against some unexpected situations and the bunkers are going to gobble you up at some stage. The brutal final stretch is also a tremendous closing examination.

What sort of chance does Tiger have?

Tiger’s biggest challenge is coping with not being as good as he used to be, but his other problem is the other players aren’t scared of him anymore.

Which Brits should we look out for and why?

If you get bad weather again, I would look towards Darren Clarke – he is the ultimate controller of the ball in nasty conditions. I have a fancy for someone who hasn’t contended so far this year, but usually plays pretty well in the summer. Simon Dyson.

Finally, who is going to win?

Luke Donald, because he’s the complete package and his work with Dave Alred has brought on the mental side of his game.

The 2012 Open Championship is live across the BBC from 9am Thursday, July 19, on TV, HD & Radio 5 live.
