Your golf travel bosses walk to the open

Seve Ballesteros was known for his love for a challenge, and to honour the Spanish golfing legend, YourGolfTravel.com co-founders Andrew Harding and Ross Marshall have set themselves the demanding task of walking 300 miles for charity ahead of this month’s Open Championship.

Harding, Marshall and a team from leading golf travel company will head off from London on their ‘Walk for Seve’ in aid of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation and Cancer Research UK on Tuesday July 10, planning to arrive at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club seven days later.

Starting from Cancer Research UK’s headquarters in the heart of the capital, the YourGolfTravel.com team aim to walk between 40-45 miles a day, with their task made even harder as they will all be carrying golf bags and clubs along the way.

In addition, the fundraisers will hit tee shots from a number of iconic golfing venues in memory of Ballesteros and his two Open victories at Royal Lytham and also to promote Seve Day – a pan-European golf tournament taking place throughout the whole of this month.

Marshall said: ‘’Seve played some of his most amazing shots at Royal Lytham. He will always be regarded as one of the greats of the game and we wanted to do something to commemorate his achievements with The Open being played there this month.

‘’Many people and their families, including myself, have been affected by cancer and we hope that we can help make a difference and aid research by raising as much money as possible.’’

Ballesteros won two of three Open titles at Royal Lytham in 1979 and 1988 and his amazing course exploits captured the imagination of the golfing public worldwide before he tragically lost his battle against brain cancer last May aged 54.

The ‘Walk for Seve’ team’s journey will take them past towns and cities including Oxford, Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool on their way to their final destination.

They will also visit Wentworth  – home of the European Tour – and The Belfry, where Ballesteros amazed fans by becoming the first player to drive the par-four 10th hole during the 1985 Ryder Cup, and hope to raise thousands of pounds for his foundation and raise awareness for Seve Day along the way.

Seve Day is being backed by the likes of European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal, ‘The Voice of Golf’ Peter Alliss and top stars Justin Rose and Ian Poulter – allowing competitors to play a round of golf anywhere in Europe and register their scores on the www.seveday.com website.

A star studded grand final will then be held at The Belfry in October 2012, shortly after this year’s Ryder Cup in Medinah, where the top 72 stableford score entrants will play for big prizes and the Seve 2012 Trophy.

In return for a £25 / €30 entry fee, which goes directly to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, participants also receive £250 worth of vouchers, golf lessons, free balls and complimentary rounds of golf, plus a chance to win an exclusive prize to The Masters 2013 if they win the Grand Final.
