Muirfield Hole 12

Par 4, 382 yards

Another hole that is more strategic than might first appear.

A drive close to the bunker on the left of the fairway, without dropping into it, is the ideal line because it sets up the best chance of competitors hitting it close to the pin with their second shot.

Bail out to the right and you have to take on an array of bunkers that sit close to the right edge of the putting surface.

Add to that the natural right-to-left slope on the green and it can become difficult to stop the ball close to a pin which is cut on the right-hand side.

This is also quite a narrow green giving far less room to work with for a ball coming in from the right side of the fairway.

This hole is perfectly placed in the round; just when those chasing the leader feel they have to push for birdies, this relatively short but awkward two-shotter can very easily lead to a ‘quick’ bogey. Or worse.
