Muirfield Hole 14

Par 4, 478 yards

If the ‘run for home’ started on the short 13th, then it gathers pace with the considerable challenge that confronts the Open field here.

Every great Open Championship venue tests the players over the closing holes and Muirfield does that to a degree matched by few.

The tee here is on the highest point of the course and the further the drive the less room you have – the narrowest point lies at the 280-yard mark.

Play just short of the bottleneck and the fairway bunkers on both sides are always a threat.

It can then be as much as a long iron to a plateau green which falls away on all sides and is protected by a lone bunker (which is small but evil) just off the right edge.

Hawtree, not a fan of flat uninteresting ground, has added more furrows on the left.

Your next shot after going through the back is not much fun either.
