Muirfield Hole 17

Par 5, 575 yards
Tom Watson says: “There is a new back tee on this famous hole for this year’s championship, which makes the test nearly 30 yards longer than it was in 2002.
“However, in normal conditions it will be comfortably reachable for much of the field in two shots, because the prevailing wind is from behind.
“The angle of the tee makes it tempting to cut the corner here, but this should be resisted, as some of the worst rough on the whole course (not to mention five horrible bunkers) is often on the elbow of this right-to-left dog-leg.
“If the wind is from the east, then there are four more big bunkers to carry with your second shot, before a wedge into the green, which is set back into the dunes and has a very narrow entrance with a bunker left and right. There will be plenty of eagles here during the week; but there will be some high numbers as well.”
