Denise Lewis and friends raise £15,000 for charity

Former Olympic champion Denise Lewis was one of 200 participants who helped raise more than £15,000 for cancer charities during a recent golf day in north London.

Muswell Hill Golf Club hosted the second annual Swing for Sammy event, which is
staged in memory of Samantha Trow, a teacher at Brooklands Primary School in Finchley who died 18 months ago of bowel cancer at the age of 26.

The winning fourball team, with 90 Stableford points, consisted of Muswell Hill members Bill Carey, Mandy Miller and Gary Stephens, and guest Cornelius Bohane, who won a free round of golf at Turnberry.

One of the highlights of the day was a trick-shot show by leading professional Jeremy Dale while host-club assistant Alistair Bennett won the professionals’ prize of a Pulsar watch for a level-par 71.

“The day has raised at least £15,000, slightly less than the £17,000 we managed at the inaugural Swing for Sammy last year, but the economic climate then was much more favourable,” said Ben Trow, Samantha’s husband.

“We really can’t speak highly enough of the generous support we’ve received yet again from so many people – those who took part and those who didn’t but still made donations along with prize donors, hole sponsors and auction bidders, many of them companies from the golf and travel industries.

“Special thanks must also go to the members and staff of Muswell Hill Golf Club, so many of whom helped out both beforehand and on the day to ensure the success of the event.”

The bulk of the money raised will go to Cancer Research UK, but bequests of £1,000 each will be passed on to Hospice in the Weald near Tunbridge Wells, Royal Marsden Hospital, and St Mark’s Hospital, Northwick Park.
