It’s the news the golf world has been waiting for – Tiger Woods will return to the game of golf at next week’s WGC-Accenture Matchplay Championship in Arizona.

In a statement on his website, Woods said: “I’m now ready to play again.” In the past couple of weeks, the world No 1 has witnessed the birth of his second child and he now feels that the time is right to enter the competitive arena once more.

“Elin and our new son Charlie are doing great,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my time at home with the family and appreciate everyone’s support and kind wishes.”

It can’t come too soon for those involved in the game, as TV audiences and sponsors have been turning their back on Tigerless golf.

“We are delighted that Tiger is returning to competition and look forward to watching him compete next week,” Finchem said.

Beyond next week Woods’s hasn’t disclosed his schedule, but it’s likely to take in the WGC-CA Championship in Florida, possibly Arnold Palmer’s tournament at Bay Hill before heading to Augusta for the first Major of the year.
