Handicap Tracker: Hit more greens

In association with American Golf

Last week only 36% of Handicap Tracker users recorded 5 or more greens in regulation, with 36% not recording a single GIR.

Hitting greens is a key stat if you’re aiming to lower your handicap and in TG’s recent Zone Your Game supplement American Golf research proved the importance of approach play, and what you should aim for if you want to break 100, 90 and 80.

This formula is a great rule of thumb:

95 – (2xGIR) = final score
For example, two GIR is 91 and three GIR is 89 etc.

» Steve Hay (14.2) only managed two GIR on his way to a 94 at Blackpool Park GC.

» Antony Oldham (9.5) also only managed two greens but some fantastic recovery play saw him still record a 86 at Nuneaton GC.

» Don Burston (20.7) again only hit two GIR at Drayton Park GC and had to sign for a 104 for 28 stableford points.

Once you start hitting those greens you will start to see the handicap tumble:

» Neil Stubbings (11.6) shot 77 by hitting 11 greens and had his handicap cut by 0.6.

» Adam Pickavance (18.3) shot an impressive 83 with 10 greens in regulation and dropped 1.5 from from 19.8.

In this video TG Elite Teaching Professional Adrian Fryer shows you a tee-peg drill that will help you get the clubface square at impact consistently so you can attack pins with an iron in your hand.
