Rate My Swing: Ben Garwood

“One look at your swing it’s obvious you’re a good player – there’s a young Adam Scott look about your swing.

“There are a couple of areas I would like you to consider looking at which I feel would make you more consistent and an even better player.

“Firstly, at the top of your backswing you have a tendency to let your left wrist ‘arch’ a little rather than hinging ‘in plane’.

“This arching can set the clubface a little closed to the swing arc and mean you have to drop ‘inside’ a touch to protect yourself from turning it left too much.

“Secondly, your arms tend to travel a little too far behind your head at the top – your right elbow pointing directly behind you.

“At the top of your swing your right elbow shouldn’t point past the right seam running down from your underarm in your shirt.

“This arm position supports the left arm, hands and club in a more ‘compact’ look, especially with medium and short irons.

“So at the top, you’ll feel a little more 3/4 with your swing and your left thumb and wrist will be a touch more ‘under’ the shaft.

“In your finish, your left hip and leg look like they don’t quite fully rotate and clear, meaning they can block a free release sometimes and make you hit with your hands too much.

“Aim to feel those hips clear and drag your hands along to a free and unimpeded finish. Keep up the good work on that great swing.”
