East Anglian golfer qualifies for Open Championship

East Anglian golfer Jamie Abbott, aged 23, will be teeing up next to Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood after qualifying for The Open Championship at St Andrews, from the 15-18 July.

Competition was stiff in Abbott’s qualifying event with over 1,000 entrants playing for 12 chances to lift the Claret Jug. In the final stage, at Kingsbarns, Abbott shot -4 to tie for second place, taking him into a playoff from which he was able to secure a ticket to St Andrews.

Abbott, a top amateur player and England squad player from Fynn Valley Golf Club, Suffolk, has been coached for the last five years by Paul Ashwell at Wyboston Lakes Golf Centre, and currently has a handicap of +4.

Paul Ashwell, head coach at Wyboston Lakes, said: “I am really excited for Jamie. This is an outstanding achievement and is a big step in our plan for him to become a successful tournament professional.”
