Night golf proves big charity hit

Kind hearted golfers showed their support for a South Yorkshire charity by illuminating the region at a special fundraiser.

Playing with luminous balls and lit fairways, ten teams took part in the unique Night Golf event at Beauchief Golf Course, which raised more than £700 for Help a Child Have a Chance.

The charity, which supports sick and disadvantaged children around South Yorkshire and the North Midlands, was set up in memory of a local broadcaster Dave Kilner, who sadly died in September 2009.

It is now run by Dave’s wife Shirley, their two daughters Rebecca and Nicola and trustees Martina Bradshaw and Eamonn Hunt who wanted to carry Dave’s legacy on.

The Night Golf event was won by a team from Sheffield United, which included club captain Chris Morgan – a good friend of Dave’s who was welcomed as a new patron to the charity during the evening.

Rebecca Kilner said: “The Golf Night went really well, we had ten teams of 40 golfers playing seven holes. It was pitch black when they teed off, but the luminous balls and lit fairways, helped create a really unique and entertaining evening.

“We raised around £700 and the winning team was employees from Sheffield United, it was a real success and we are looking to do it again in the autumn.”

Shirley Kilner added: “The money raised has not been earmarked for any project yet and we would welcome any suggestions from the public as to a worthy cause we could help.

“We help sick, needy or disadvantaged children in the South Yorkshire area, helping to give them an opportunity to improve their quality of life.”

Andy Carnall, golf manager at Sheffield International Venues (SIV) which manages Beauchief Golf Course, said: “The Golf Night was a real success and we were so pleased to help this local charity whilst creating a unique competition that brought some great team spirit to the golf course.”

Help a Child Have a Chance has a number of fundraisers planned over the next few months including An Evening with Steve Womack, race nights, bucket collections and a dinner at Baldwin’s Omega on Friday, September 30.
