TG Blog: Learning from better players

Friday 18th February

“Great progress has been made in these last two weeks. I’ve played seven rounds in 14 days over five different courses, played in my first competition and lowered my personal best.

“If I was writing this two days ago I would have said that scores are heading steadily in the right direction, but these last two days have not been pleasant – such is the way in golf it would seem.

“My greatest learning experience came from the Pro-Am Competition I played in. I was paired with James, my coach, and we went round with Darren (pro) and Charlie (amateur playing off +1).

“Darren recorded the lowest score of the day, 69, and with Charlie and James also showing me how it was done, it was a time to soak up the great golf going on around me. My own personal glory came on the 17th when I recorded the only birdie for the hole.

“What I saw that day has changed my attitude to my own golf. The very next time I went on the course I had an idea of the tempo that I wanted in my game and a clear memory of how good golf is played… and I shot my lowest ever score!

“The change in attitude is about not ‘trying’ too hard. It’s a strangely difficult thing to do, but I’m beginning to trust it and I’m seeing results. But the bad holes and bad shots keep creeping back in.”
