First blog post from Novice2Scratch golfer

In August 42-year-old David West set himself the target of going from a complete novice golfer to a scratch player in just 12 months.

He had his first lesson on August 11 and has been making great progress for the past few months with the help of Wilson Golf.

Now David has broken 100 for the first time he will be blogging about his journey on the Today’s Golfer website every other Friday, starting today, until he hopefully achieves his goal at the end of the summer.

Is it possible for an absolute novice to become a scratch standard golfer in one year? This is my challenge.

I had wanted to take up golf for many years but a career, a young family and a tendency to obsess are not a great base to start from. But then I was made redundant and decided to go for it.

After a few lessons and 36 holes I was hooked. I then managed to convince myself, and my wife, that it would be a great idea to spend 12 months playing golf and writing about my experiences.

It’s going well so far – when there’s not too much snow to get on the course! My coach James Hull, who is based at Mount Pleasant GC in Bedfordshire, is now (mostly) happy with my swing and the New Year has seen a change of emphasis from learning the techniques of golf to applying them out there on the course.

Just this week I recorded my first birdie and broke 100 for the first time. Come spring time I will be looking to get a handicap in the teens and then I’ll be playing five to 10 rounds a week trying to bring that down.

It’s going to be an interesting year and you can share the experience and follow my progress right here with me on www.todays-golfer.com.
