Fantasy League: Madrid Masters preview

We stay in Europe for the Today’s Golfer Fantasy League this week with a trip to the Spanish capital for the Madrid Masters at El Encin.

The field isn’t as strong as last week but it is sprinkled with a few big names, including world number one Luke Donald, the Molinari brothers and wonderkid Matteo Manassero.

The Madrid Masters has moved venues for all of its four stagings so past form in the event is not as important as usual when selecting your six.

The El Encin course for this year features undulating greens and some superbly-positioned bunkers so accuracy off the tee and onto the correct sections of the greens will be important.

TG’s six-man Fantasy League team for the Madrid Masters is:

Luke Donald, $4.5m
The world number one will rightly start the week as favourite. He’s defending champion, albeit at a different course, and has only finished outside the top 20 once in his last 10 starts, including four top-fours and a win.

Simon Dyson, $1.2m
The Yorkshireman is on a fantastic run which has taken him into the world’s top 30. He’s always been an accurate player and he’s found something on the greens in recent weeks that has turned him into a consistent, weekly contender.

Peter Hanson, $1.7m
It’s been a relatively quiet season for the Ryder Cupper, but he does have six top-10s to his name. He proved with his two wins last year that he knows how to win when he gets in contention and his 15th position in green in regulation will stand him in good stead for this week.

David Lynn, $0.8m
His last three finishes of T6-2-T30 have snuck him into the top 100 in the world. He is 27th on Tour in sand saves, which will be a handy skill at this week’s heavily-bunkered venue.

Matteo Manassero, $2.5m
He’s one of the purest ball strikers on Tour and sits 11th in driving accuracy and greens in regulation, and 12th in putts per GIR. His first win on Tour came in Spain last October.

Francesco Molinari, $2.6m
He’s been troubled by a wrist injury this year, but with that now behind him you would expect a strong finish to the season. He’s one of the true class acts in the field and ranks second in driving accuracy and 12th in sand saves.
