Fantasy League: Portugal Masters preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy League stays in Iberia this week for the European Tour’s Portugal Masters at Oceanico Victoria in the Algarve.

It’s a tournament that has a history of attracting a strong field and past winners include Lee Westwood and Alvaro Quiros. The Englishman isn’t teeing it up this week but the big-hitting Spaniard is joined by Martin Kaymer, Francesco Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Victoria is a lovely resort course but its open fairways and generous greens shouldn’t pose too many problems to the best players in the world. There are numerous water hazards but providing they steer clear of these the tournament should be decided by who performs best on the greens.

TG’s six-man Fantasy League team for the Portugal Masters is:

Jamie Donaldson, $1.0m
The Welshman is 30th in the Race to Dubai, having recorded seven top 10s this season, including each of his last two starts. He’s ranked seventh on the European Tour in one putts.

Peter Hanson, $1.7m
A top 10 in the Dunhill Links and T6 in Madrid last week show the Ryder Cupper his close to his tournament-winning best. He finished T4 here two years ago, but didn’t play last year.

Martin Kaymer, $4.5m
The former world number one isn’t on blistering form but he’s desperate for another win this season. He’s 12th on Tour in stroke average.

Joost Luiten, $1.1m
His form looks red-hot heading into this week. Finishes of 15-T6-3-T9 came before a week off last week. He’s 12th in greens in regulation so a hot putter could be all that stands between him and a maiden Tour title.

Francesco Molinari, $2.6m
He’s finished as runner-up at Victoria the last two years. He made a great start in Madrid last week before having to settle for T6. If he continues his improvement with the putter in Portugal then he will be very hard to beat.

Alvaro Quiros, $2.3m
He would have had a top 20 last week if it weren’t for a quadruple bogey at the 16th on Sunday. He won here in 2008 and as well as being the longest driver on Tour, he’s also 14th in putts per GIR.
