Football hero Vieira stars at charity golf event

Football star Patrick Vieira added a dash of celebrity to proceedings when Aldwickbury Park Golf Club hosted the Ian Swanston charity day.

The French World Cup winner and former Arsenal captain was one of 75 golfers who teed up for the competition, in aid of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS), held over Aldwickbury Park’s picturesque and challenging Park Course.

The ninth annual charity day, in memory of Ian Swanston, raised £4,500 – and since its inception some £130,000 has been raised by the golf days for the NASS and Crohns & Colitis UK.

Claiming the honours in the keenly fought 18-hole contest – which drew teams of four from across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire – was Scott Russell after carding 40 Stableford points.

Scott’s team of PaulPreece, Danny Jones and Steve Atkins took the team honours with a combined Stableford score of 104 points.

The fun didn’t stop when the final putt was sunk, however; a charity auction that followed help swell the coffers thanks to top-quality lots including a football shirt signed by Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, a trip for two to Stoke Park and a signed photograph of TV celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey.

Tristan Hall, Aldwickbury Park Golf Club General Manager, said: “We were delighted with the success of the latest Ian Swanston charity day, in memory of one of our much missed former members, that raised further valuable finds for the NASS. And we look forward to welcoming back all the players to our club again next year – if not sooner.”
