TG Blog: One year up and it’s final challenge time

Friday 16th September 2011

That’s it, the year is up. There is no more time to practice. It’s now time to see how far I’ve come. Next week is challenge week.

It is 361 days since I played my first round of golf, 353 days since I set myself this challenge and it’s time for the test… after one year of playing golf have I reached scratch standard?

To test my current playing standard I will play three rounds this week and from the scores achieved I will calculate the average score against par – this will be my playing standard.

As Mount Pleasant is a par 70 course with a standard scratch score of 70 (from the white tees) I will need to play the three rounds in an aggregate of 210 strokes to achieve my goal.

What are my chances? To be honest; slim. With a best score so far of 76 around the course I’m going to have to do something miraculous to be able to claim ‘scratch standard’.

What am I hoping for? Anything outside single figures will be disappointing, although single figures would be amazing after only one year of playing the game. And I have had the best year of my life so I can’t be disappointed whatever happens.

Thank you to everybody that has supported me through my year, and thank you to golf. It’s been great getting to know you.

> David will be playing his three rounds on Sunday 18th, Wednesday 21st and Friday 23rd September. Follow his progress at www.twitter.com/novice2scratch and read what David has learnt from his challenge in the December issue of TG.
