Murphy’s on the mark to win Celeb Am title

Mark Murphy played sensational golf on the Cromwell Course on Friday to secure the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship Celeb Am title at Nailcote Hall, Solihull.

After scoring a sensational 49 yesterday to surge through the field and finish in tied third spot in the championship, Murphy carried this form over into the Celeb Am as he took to the course at 8.30am for the first of the shotgun starts.

Scoring birdies on three of the first four holes, Murphy put together a flawless 50 to finish on -4, two shots ahead of his nearest challenger, former Manchester United footballer Clayton Blackmore, who finished on -2.

Also challenging for the event were BBC One Strictly Come Dancing star Len Goodman, professional golf trick shot maestro David Edwards, cricketer Chris Broad and former Ryder Cup stars Maurice Bembridge and Brian Barnes.

Played in glorious conditions with the sun beating down on the Cromwell Course at Nailcote Hall, the Celeb Am was a fitting tribute to a sensational championship, which has attracted record crowds to the Warwickshire course to enjoy the golf and hospitality on offer in the course and in the superb tented village.

Visitors on Friday were treated to golf from legends including Tony Jacklin, Brian Barnes and Tommy Horton alongside leading celebrities such as South African cricketer Mike Procter and former Premiership footballers John Jensen and Peter Withe.

The team competition was won by Fort AutosĀ on a score of 85 points.
