Phil Mickelson Wins $50,000 For Childrens’ Charity

Phil Mickelson, undoubtedly the best wedge player of our generation, arguably ever, last night faced a 100-yard pitch shot to win $1 million for childrens’ charity First Book, but he fluffed it.

Teaming up with his corporate sponsor KPMG, Mickelson took dead aim from one end zone to a makeshift green in the other, during halftime of the San Diego Chargers versus Denver Broncos American Football game.

At stake was as much as $1 million for First Book, a non-profit organisation that provides new books for children in need. The nearer the left hander got to the flag the more money he raised.

Full of adrenaline, in-front of a packed crowd, Mickelson hit his shot long but will still won $50,000, enough to buy 20,000 books.

Mickelson, using a 56-degree wedge, needed to land his shot within five feet of the hole to win $1 million and according to the PGA Tour stats, the American has successfully managed this feat 13.5% of the time from 95-105 yards since 2003.

Mickelson is a season ticketholder at the San Diego Chargers and recently bought a stake in the team.

Before the game, Mickelson joined the Monday Night Football television set and was asked about the Ryder Cup. “I’m still licking wounds,” said Mickelson, who counts four major championships among his 40 career PGA Tour wins. “It still stings. It was one of the toughest losses I’ve even been involved with. I can’t believe we didn’t pull it through.”
