Rugby ace ready for Sixth Charity Golf Day

Wales rugby legend Gareth Edwards tees up for his sixth annual celebrity charity golf day at The Celtic Manor Resort on Friday September the 14th.

Edwards, a three-time Grand Slam winner with Wales during the 1970s, welcomes a host of his friends from the worlds of showbiz and entertainment for the event on the Twenty Ten Course, where he is the club president.

Eighteen corporate teams of three will all have their fourball completed by one of the celebrities who include Zinzan Brooke, Gethin Jones, Allan Lamb and Gary McAllister.

The day’s golf will be rounded off by a presentation dinner and charity auction in aid of Cardiff Institute for the Blind and Cardiff University’s MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics.

Edwards is President of Cardiff Institute for the Blind, which has been a beneficiary of all five previous stagings of the event, but it is the first time the golf day has supported the Cardiff University Medical Research Centre.

Celtic Manor owner Sir Terry Matthews is a keen advocate for Cardiff University’s world-leading research and acts as Patron to the University’s European Stem Cell Research Institute. Edwards said: “We started the Golf Day to celebrate my 60th birthday back in 2007 but it proved so popular we keep coming back for an annual event. We have a lot of fun with a lot of old friends on the golf course but it’s also very satisfying to raise funds for these very worthwhile causes.”

Fabulous prizes in the charity auction include a Ryder Cup shirt signed by 2010 European Captain Colin Montgomerie, a luxury stay at Celtic Manor and an ultimate hospitality day at Chepstow Racecourse.

Professor Julie Williams, who leads Alzheimer’s research at the Cardiff University MRC Centre, said: “We are enormously grateful for Gareth’s generosity and support, which makes our fight to discover the causes of dementia easier. We have a lot of work to do and need all the help we can get.”
