Torrance hands over bumper cheque for Help the Heroes

Legendary Surrey venue Wentworth recently hosted a small but important cheque presentation as National Golf Club Challenge Patrons Sam Torrance and Mark Foster handed over a hefty £237,220 cheque to the Help for Heroes charity.

The bumper cheque was presented to Mark Elliott, Help for Heroes Head of External Operations, and Band of Brothers member Mark Taylor, and will help fund the great work Help for Heroes does in supporting those members of the Armed Forces who have suffered life-changing injuries or illness while serving their country.

The money was raised by the popular National Golf Club Challenge (NGCC) competition, sponsored in 2013 by Volvo Car UK. The National Golf Club Challenge is a national inter-club tournament which invites golf clubs throughout the UK to compete against each other, at the same time as collectively fundraising for Help for Heroes.

WO2 Mark Taylor, The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, is currently a resident at Tedworth House in Wiltshire, one of four Help for Heroes-managed Recovery Centres. Mark suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, identified in January 2004, and golf has been one of the Battle Back Sports Recovery activities he has participated in. Mark is currently Battle Back Golf Champion.

Commenting on the presentation, Torrance said: “I’m honoured to present this wonderful donation on behalf of the NGCC team and the generous golfers who have taken part in this year’s events. It’s a huge amount of money going to a very deserving cause. May it do an awful lot of good for those who seriously need it as a result of serving our country.”

Mark Elliott said: “The National Golf Club Challenge is a wonderful example of thousands of people coming together to ‘do their bit’ – from the hundreds of golf clubs which took part in this year’s challenge, the golf professionals and caddies, the sponsors and organisations who donated auction prizes, to the NGCC team itself; it’s a fantastic team effort. Servicemen and Women who are injured today will still need our support for life. They are still fighting their own battles and, with your continued help, we will ensure they don’t fight alone.”

Additionally, the NGCC team hosted the very successful NGCC Auction which ran throughout the golfing season, auctioning superb golfing holidays, experiences, memorabilia, equipment and much more. Huge thanks going to the Great British Golfing community who responded so generously – and to NGCC partners who contributed significantly to the national fundraising effort.
