Interview: Absolute Radio’s Russ Williams

How long have you been playing golf?
21 years.

How often do you play?
About once a week – nowhere near enough!

What’s your handicap?
18.

What are the strengths – and weaknesses – of your game?
Putting is my real weakness. Tee to green not much of a problem, but my strength is the ability mentally to put bad holes out of my mind, easy to do when I play so little!

Favourite club in the bag?
Benross hybrid/rescue 4 iron.

Any clubs that you don’t get on with so well?
Driving irons – I find them impossible to use so I don’t.

Have you been fitted for your clubs?
No but I am open to offers!

Are you a member anywhere?
Yes, Brocket Hall

What’s your best round?
81 at Hylands Park Golf Course near Chelmsford I was playing off 14.

Ever won anything in golf?
I go on a golf trip a couple of times a year and win various things from golf balls, to fun trophies but never anything serious. I declare my true handicap on golf days unlike some bandits!

What’s your most memorable shot?
Recently, 3 iron rescue club on the 18th hole (Melbourne Course at Brocket Hall) carried 220 plus over the water and onto the green. Those sort of shots make you go back and play again.

Ever had a hole in one?
No but pretty close on a 215 metre par 3 in Sweden on a course near Isaberg Golf Club near Hestra last summer.

Ever played with anyone famous?
Yes quite a few. Best fun I had was with my colleague Ian Wright – what a golfer he is. 3 Handicap but plays like a Pro.

What’s the best course you’ve ever played?
Monte Rei in Portugal – a golfer’s paradise.

Is there one course you’d love to play?
St Andrews to see if I could do as well as I did on the Playstation.

Who would be in your dream fourball?
Nick Faldo, Jack Nicholson, Robbie Williams and Miguel Angel Jiminez.

Who’s going to win the Open?
I would love to see Lee Westwood win.

Who’s going to win the Ryder Cup?
After watching The Masters I think the US will be stronger but think Europe will sneak it.
