Monty’s Masterclass: Pressure Putting

In the latest issue of TG (Summer 2014) we start Monty’s Masterclass, a guide to holing out with confidence by Colin Montgomerie. Part one is Pressure Putting – here is Monty’s intro to the magazine feature, plus a video to accompany the article.

Eight-foot putts are the difference between winning and losing. It doesn’t matter if you are playing strokeplay or matchplay, these putts make all the difference. If you have an eight-foot putt for birdie or a win, you are eager to capitalise on your good work. If it’s for par or a half, they are crucial to maintaining momentum – so that’s where we’ll start in the first of my four-part series. I’m not going to clutter up your mind with lots of technical tips; in fact, I want to clear your mind of almost everything as you settle over the ball.

In the first part of my Masterclass, which you can read in full in issue 323 of Today’s Golfer, I’ve got an uphill putt with some right-to-left break on it. It is not an easy putt, but it is one I’d expect to make – and you can too. There are some basics you need to get right, but above all, you need to have the correct mentality.
