Trump’s Scotland hotel looks dead in the water

Controversial US politician and golf course owner Donald Trump has run into more trouble, having failed in his bid to stop an offshore wind farm being built opposite Trump International Golf Links near Aberdeen.

Trump, who is the Republican presidential frontrunner, said the construction of 11 turbines off the northeastern coast of Scotland would be a blot on the horizon of his multi-million pound golf complex in Balmedie.

However, the UK Supreme Court has thrown out Trump’s latest appeal and case which means that his proposed hotel won’t happen as things stand.

The billionaire businessman had twice unsuccessfully fought the scheme through the Scottish courts.

A Trump Organization spokesperson hit back saying: “This is an extremely unfortunate verdict for the residents of Aberdeen and anyone who cares about Scotland’s economic future.

“The EOWDC will completely destroy the bucolic Aberdeen Bay and cast a terrible shadow upon the future of tourism for the area.

“History will judge those involved unfavorably and the outcome demonstrates the foolish, small minded and parochial mentality which dominates the current Scottish Government’s experiment with wind energy.

“While the EOWDC’s “leadership” have stated the project will proceed, the onerous planning conditions remain unpurified and it is common knowledge that there is no funding for a technology that is now many years obsolete.”

But Trump isn’t giving up the fight yet. The spokesperson added: “We will evaluate the Court’s decision and continue to fight this proposal on every possible front.”

The European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) project predicts the venture will provide enough electricity to power 68,000 UK households over a

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “The proposed European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre is an important project for Aberdeen and north-east Scotland.

“It will give the industry the ability to test and demonstrate new technologies to enable costs to be further reduced.”
