Ernie Els: My life in photos

My Open debut in 1989
This was taken at Troon in 1989, during my first Open Championship. I know that’s where I am because of two things: the yellow score board in the background and my haircut. I was in the middle of my national service. I was probably playing a practice round with Nick Price, Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone. I weighed about 84 kilos back then; I’m 110 now. You can tell how long ago it was by the fact I’m using a persimmon-headed driver. It was a Wood brothers club, as I recall.
Joy at the 1997 US Open at Congressional
My caddie, Ricki (Roberts), and I are on the 18th green at Congressional. I’ve just holed to win the 1997 US Open. We are basically going nuts. It was a great moment, very satisfying because the crowd that day were really on Colin Montgomerie and myself. They really wanted an American to win.
