The Open to return to Royal Portrush in 2025

The Open Championship is heading back to Northern Ireland with Royal Portrush confirmed as host for 2025.

Northern Ireland won’t have to wait another 68 years for The Open to be played on its shores again– The R&A has confirmed the 153rd Championship will be heading back to Royal Portrush on the Antrim coast for a third time in 2025, just six years after its successful return.

The 2019 event, won by Shane Lowry, generated more than £100 million for the economy of Northern Ireland with 237,750 fans packing the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush – a record for a Championship staged outside St Andrews.

The last time a venue outside St Andrews hosted the Open again so quickly was Royal St George’s, in 1981 and then again four years later.

“We could not be more thrilled to be bringing The Open back to Royal Portrush in 2025,” says Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A. “There will be huge excitement among golf fans around the world to see the best men’s players facing the challenge of this magnificent links once again.

“We see huge potential for Royal Portrush to continue to develop and enhance its status, and perhaps achieve the same iconic status for golfers throughout Northern Ireland as St Andrews enjoys in Scotland. There’s a lot that needs to fall into place – but the sky really is the limit.”

Royal Portrush joins a formidable line-up of venues for The Open in the coming years with The 150th Open take place at St Andrews in 2022 and then Royal Liverpool and Royal Troon hosting the Championship in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Fans have until October 4 to enter the ticket ballot to attend The 150th Open at St Andrews, from July 10-17, 2022. Fans will be notified of the results by the end
of November.
