A Yale graduate like Jones, Lakeside GC designer Max Behr was a huge fan of the strategic ground game of St Andrews. He disliked the use of rough and preferred instead to feature wide open areas off the tee where strategy was dictated by bunkering. The greens at Lakeside are protected by angles, subtle swales, humps, hollows and false fronts (right) that prevent the golfer from obtaining a clear view into the pin unless he or she has played the perfect tee shot.
