Both Jones and MacKenzie were enamoured by St Andrews and its strategic challenge with a heavy emphasis on being able to play shots along the ground. In addition to the false fronts ahead of the greens – notably the 5th and 14th holes – the biggest analogy between the Old Course and Augusta National is the number of options available to you. You have to check your lie, check the wind and check the pin position. You can hit a great shot, but it may not be the right shot.
