8. Hell

The poet Virgil was an early visitor to St Andrews. “To get into Hell is easy,” he wrote. “The gates of that black hole stand open night and day. But to retrace ones steps and escape, that’s the toil which is hard labour”. It’s now over 300 square metres and its walls are over 10 feet high in places.
