Monday golf news from the Masters 2009

Masters 2009

The  Masters 2009 doesn’t officially start until today, but Augusta National Golf Course was a hive of activity yesterday…

Tiger Woods, complete with a goatee, played nine holes and hit a 3-wood on the 10th before walking over to get a sandwich. He has not won the Masters Tournament since 2005, and if he doesn’t win this week, it will be the longest he has gone without being fitted for a new Green Jacket.

Phil Mickelson arrived earlier than planned at the Masters 2009 after missing the cut at the Shell Houston Open. He also played nine holes in the group behind Woods. If he wins here, he will overtake Tiger as the world’s best player.

Big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros teed it up with Luke Donald on Sunday, the first time he’s seen the course – ever – because his parents didn’t have satellite TV as he was growing up. By the way, Donald mentioned that Quiros hit a wedge into the 445-yard first hole, off soft fairways.

Another Masters 2009 rookie was Soren Kjeldsen, who was happy to go off on his own until someone asked to join him on the first tee. “Hi, my name is Ray Floyd, can I join you” said the guy. Kjeldsen shook his hand and accepted – even though Floyd and his son were using a buggy!
