Leaders struggle as weather worsens at Open Championship

The Open Championship In Association With Nikon

Yesterday’s benign weather conditiond will seem like a distant memory for the players as the wind picks up at a drizzly Turnberry.

50 players shot under par in the windless conditions yesterday but the Ayrshire links is fighting back today with gusts of 35 to 30mph forecast.

It was thought today’s early starters would face similar conditions to yesterday but this prediction hasn’t come to fruition as the unsettled weather has already moved in.

The first casualty of the tougher conditions is Ben Curtis, who started the day tied for second, but has dropped five shots in his first eight holes to drop back to level par.

Overnight leader Miguel Angel Jimenez has also started in disappointing fashion, carding bogeys on the 2nd and 3rd.

Level par 70 will be a very good score today as it looks increasingly likely that the cut mark will slip to something like +5.
