Watson predicted a win for ‘TW’

The Open Championship In Association With Nikon

A phone conversation several weeks back with Tom Watson was still ringing in my ears after the veteran’s heroic 2nd round display yesterday.

The five-times Open champion readily agreed to have a transatlantic chat as part of TG’s Open preview. We also contacted the other two former Turnberry winners – Nick Price and Greg Norman – though both declined.

Watson, easily the oldest man in the field at 59, was only too willing to take part though and I’ll never forget our 30mins phone interview, especially after what’s materialised over the past couple of days.

My final question, my parting shot was: “So who’s ging to win it then, Tom?” There was a brief reply before Watson teasingly responded with: “Somebody with the initials TW!”

Of course with Tiger now out of the hunt there’s only one TW left in town…and he just happens to be sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard!

Not only is Watson a great golfer, more importantly he’s a top man. A true gent and a wonderful ambassador for the game of golf.

That particular day Watson’s expected phone call was somewhat delayed and of course when it eventually came through I’d only gone and popped down to the works canteen for a sandwich!

Watson informed startled colleague, Equipment guru Jon Greathead, not to worry and that he’s call back shortly. Sure enough, he was true to his word and it wasn’t long before he was in full flow about The Open, Turnberry…and making that fateful Open prediction.

We’ll soon know whether Watson can maintain his form and stay the pace. I, along with many millions of golfing enthusiasts from all over the world, sincerely hope so…
