Corey Pavin will know his eight automatic qualifiers after the US PGA Championship. Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Steve Stricker and Jim Furkyk are all sure to be there but world number one Tiger Woods needs a big result to ensure his qualification.

There are still a few more weeks to run before the European team is finalised but Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter all look virtually assured of theit places.

And European Captain Colin Montgomerie will have a host of world class golfers in the top 50 to choose his three wildcards from.
