Fantasy League preview: WGA-CA Championship

The final event of the Today’s Golfer Winter Fantasy League is the WGC-CA Championship at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral, Miami.

The Blue Monster lives up to its name at a whopping 7,266 yards and 11 water hazards in play.

Because this is a World Golf Championship tournament it’s worth double points, making it even more important in deciding who wins the holiday to Turkey and other great prizes.

Phil Mickelson will be defending his title in an all-star field in Florida, but with only 68 players teeing it up there’s no halfway cut to worry about.

The quality of the field is going to make it very hard to stick to the $15m budget and some sacrifices will have to be made but here are TG’s six tips:

Paul Casey $3.8m
The big-hitting Englishman has had a great start to 2010 with five top 11 finishes in six starts. He’s proved he can win on both sides of the pond and will do it again very soon.

Retief Goosen $2.8m
The world number 17 was runner-up at the CA Championship two years ago and has only finished outside the top 20 once in his last 11 starts.

Soren Hansen $1.6
The Dane has begun the push for a second Ryder Cup appearance well in 2010 with five top 10s and finished T13th here last year.

JB Holmes $1.0m
The longest hitter on the PGA Tour sneaked into the field with a T12th at last week’s Honda Classic and his length will make him a great budget buy.

Ian Poulter $3.0m
Poults will be looking to make it abck-to-back WGC titles off the back of his Accenture World Match Play win and his strokeplay form suggests he’ll have a great chance.

Camilo Villegas $2.8m
Coming off the back of victory at the Honda Classic and third at the World Match Play Villegas is arguably in the form of his life. Showed he could win back-to-back tournaments in the 2008 FedEx Cup play-offs.
