Westwood goes to number one in the world

Lee Westwood officially became the world number one this morning, ending five and a half years of domination at the top by Tiger Woods.

Talking to the BBC, he said that it hadn’t sunk in yet. “When you’ve been working all your life to be good at this game and you are told you are the best golfer on the planet, it is quite a thought. The world is a very big place, and there are a lot of golfers in it.”

When he actually found out he was world number one, he was in a supermarket buying a pair of rubber gloves and some mashed potato. His caddie rang him on his mobile and told him that the only other guy who could overtake Tiger Woods – Martin Kaymer – was not going to make it.

And so the irony was that Woods was overtaken by Westwood without either player hitting a ball in competition over the weekend.

Westwood has recovered from a calf strain and has had four weeks off since playing a pivotal part in Europe’s win over the United States in the Ryder Cup.

He flew to China immediately after doing the interviews, and with all the main protagonists including Westwood, Kaymer, Tiger and Phil Mickelson, all playing in the HSBC Champions Trophy in Shanghai, it promises to be a thrilling week…
