Fantasy League: WGC Bridgestone Invitational preview

The fourth event of the Today’s Golfer Fantasy League season is the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, which is worth double points.

The main headline is the return to action of former world number one Tiger Woods. The current world number 28 joins a star-studded field the week before the season’s final Major, the US PGA Championship.

It’s a small field so there’s no cut, but with so many of the world’s best players, managers face some tough decisions about which big-money players to select.

The tournament is hosted by Firestone Country Club, Ohio. At 7,400 yards, the South Course is the longest par 70 on the PGA Tour schedule.

Distance will be a factor, but accuracy is the real key with fairways and greens hit playing a pivotal role. Putting is not as important here as in many other American tournaments so look for quality ball strikers with a good record in this event.

TG’s six-man Fantasy League team for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational is:

Sergio Garcia, $2.0m
What came first, the smile or the good form? It’s hard to say but Sergio has both of them back now and that makes him a real contender. Has a pair of top 10s in the last two Majors and looks ready to win again.

Fredrik Jacobson, $1.0m
The American-based Swede is a short game wizard and won the Travelers Championship recently. Recorded top 20s in the US Open and Open Championship.

Zach Johnson, $2.0m
The former Masters champ has quietly gone about putting a very good run of form together, with five top 16s in eight starts. Has only finished outside the top 22 twice in seven starts at the Bridgestone.

Hunter Mahan, $2.6m
While the defending champion hasn’t recorded a top 10 since May, his impressive record at Firestone reads T22-T10-T4-1.

Bo Van Pelt, $1.6m
Van Pelt again represents fantastic value for money in a world class field. The only time he’s finished outside the top 14 in his last seven events was as The Open (T57) and was T3 here last year.

Tiger Woods, $5.0m
He may not have won since 2009 and had a forgettable 2011 to date but the former world number one has seven wins in 11 starts at Firestone – and his other four starts included three top fours. Beware the wounded Tiger.
