This year’s Barclays Scottish Open will move to Loch Lomond to the new links at Castle Stuart near Inverness.

The European Tour has confirmed the switch after months of speculation, which saw Edinburgh’s Renaissance Club mooted as another potential venue.

The shift north for the Barclays Scottish Open, after nine successful years at Loch Lomond Golf Club, will bring a welcome boost for the economy around the Highlands and Islands and neighbouring Moray after a difficult time for the region, according to EventScotland.

From the 7-10 July, Castle Stuart will welcome the best players from The European Tour to the outstanding links course and its beautiful surroundings. It will provide golf fans in the region an exciting opportunity to witness a wonderful display of golfing talent on their doorstep and perhaps get involved as one of the many volunteers needed to make an event of this scale a success.

Additional to volunteering opportunities during the Barclays Scottish Open, the four day event will bring welcomed tourism revenue from players and spectators making the trip north. The event is also covered heavily by local and international media and Television coverage will reach millions of homes around the world.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland commented, “EventScotland has worked closely with The European Tour throughout the venue decision for the Barclays Scottish Open next year and we are pleased that a first class venue has been identified.

“We are committed to continuing our support of the ‘Home of Golf’s’ major events in the years ahead as we build toward the 2014 Ryder Cup. They continue to provide significant impact on the economy both locally and nationally and this new venue will add to the positive results.”

Chief Executive of VisitScotland, Malcolm Roughead added, “It is great news for people in the Highlands and Islands that they will play host to the Barclays Scottish Open next July. The event is expected to invigorate Castle Stuart as a tourist spot and the jobs created will leave a lasting legacy for local residents.

“There are some wonderful holiday destinations in and around the area and we will be working with local tour operators and visitor centres to ensure the area gets the most out of this world class event coming to the region.”

EventScotland continues to invest in golf across the country and it can boast a portfolio of golf events for next year that includes the RICOH Women’s British Open, the Scottish Hydro Challenge, Scottish Senior Open and the Ladies Scottish Open.

The power and prestige of the European Tour continues to grow across the world and title sponsors Barclays aim to make this one of the best events on Tour. Following the exciting victory in 2010 for Edoardo Molinari after playing alongside his brother Francesco and Darren Clarke on the final day, everyone involved will be eagerly awaiting the return of the Italian champion and a host of others that will descend upon Castle Stuart keen to tackle the new course and get their hands on the trophy.
