Woods happy with first round

Tiger said he was “happy” with his first competitive round of the season, after shooting a bogey-free 3-under-par 69, to be five shots off the lead, after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

“I probably hit the ball well all day,” he said, “I hit just a couple of loose shots that I know what I did wrong, which was great. Easy fixes, and move on from that.”

There was huge expectation to see how he would start the year, especially because he has been working with his coach, Sean Foley, on building his new swing.

“It’s an evolution,” he said. “Today I felt like I was able to control the ball most of the day, and hit some really good shots.”

The lead after the first round at Torrey Pines in San Diego is held by the Korean Sunghoon Kang, who shot an 8-under-par 64, a shot ahead of Americans Alex Prugh and Ryder Cup sensation Ricky Fowler.

Phil Mickelson and John Daly (his first decent round for a while) were on 5-under, with Tiger and Brit Brian Davis two shots further behind on 3-under. It was a disappointing day for Justin Rose (Even) and the Scot Martin Laird (+1).
