clakre morning after

Open Champion Darren Clarke had a good day on the golf course yesterday, but it looks like he had an even night off it!

The 42-year-old had promised the party would be long and so it seemed as he returned to Sandwich this morning (Monday, July 18) for pictures around the 18th and on the Kent beach.

The party had gone into the small hours and Clarke said he did not expect to get much sleep until tomorrow. He returns to northern Ireland tonight.

He said: “I had quite a few pints and quite a few glasses of wine. You have to enjoy it when you can. I had a very good night.”

He also admitted that he had received nearly 300 text messages of congratulations, but added: “I have not had a chance to read them yet. The writing is too small for me to see them in this state. I will try to figure them out tomorrow.”

Clarke held his nerve on Sunday to win The Open at Royal St George’s by three shots. He is now favourite to win the BBC Sports Personlaity of the Year award.
