Clarke turns up trumps for bookies

Darre Clarke is the toast of bookies and his in-play backers tonight according to Ladbrokes.

Clarke was a widely unfancied 150/1 chance pre-tournament and was a fantastic result for the layers who are heralding one of the best Opens in recent years thanks to increased turnover and favourable places.

In-play results proved less profitable thanks to Clarke’s army of fans who supported him over the weekend with a £75,000 bet at 5/2 the lowlight of in-play business for the firm. Clarke was also popular in the top Irish player market at 20/1.

Looking ahead to the next major McIlroy & Mickelson are the joint 10/1 favourites for the USPGA with Westwood and Donald in behind at 14/1. Woods is a 16/1 chance.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Overall we’re incredibly happy with the tournament. We gave a great deal back in-play but thanks to some competitive golf turnover was up and we’d love to do that much business across the weekend again.
“Clarke’s backers really fancied him in the conditions and didn’t depart him throughout. In weather to suit we expect McIlroy to make amends in the USPGA.”
