poor english effort

As Northern Ireland watched another of its golfing superstars win a Major golf title, England’s best were left nursing their bruised pride.

With the World No1 Luke Donald and No2 Lee Westwood missing the cut it was left to the likes of Simon Dyson and amateur Tom Lewis to restore some home-grown pride. But it never really happened. Dyson battled away in the final round and ended up a credible 9th while the 20-year-old Lewis stumbled a little to a tie for 30th.

In all truth the young star from Welwyn had a fantastic week after being joint leader after the first round.

But where was the enigmatic Ian Poulter? Sitting at home watching a masterful display from Darren Clarke probably!

Further down the leaderboard came Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Robert Rock and Gary Boyd but it was the Americans who managed something of a challenge.

Phil Mickelson’s sizzling front nine brought him right into contention but a series of missed putts on the back nine ended his hopes.

Duston Johnson also looked like he was going to give Clarke a run for his money but the wheels came of spectacularly on the par-5 14th. After striping a drive, he hit his second shot out of bounds on the right and that was the end of that!

The weather has been a major factor, but you’d have thought the English players would be used to the wind and rain. Apparently not!
