Tom Watson shows how it’s done as scores soar in awful conditions

Five-time Open Championship winner Tom Watson rolled back the years again as he defied the horrible conditions to shoot a 72.

It was a great round that included birdies at the 7th and 16th in driving rain and 20mph winds.

Watson is now +4 for the tournament and held the clubhouse lead late into the afternoon.

The quality of the 61-year-old’s round was put into perspective by the high numbers being recorded today.

Matthew Millar was the first man out and shot an 80 playing on his own. 1999 champion Paul Lawrie and Jung-gon Hwang also failed to break 80.

With around 20 players having competed their third rounds the scoring average for the day sits at approximately 77.
