westwood leads scottish open

Lee Westwood has soared to the top of the leaderboard at The Scottish Open with a stunning, open-round 65.

Westwood, who is looking to claim his first Major title at Royal St George’s next week, tackled blustery conditions in style and an eagle at the last capped a memorable round.

The World No2 already has a good record at The Open and will be keen to take his current form into next week.

Colin Montgomeries also had a good first round. HIs 67 puts him in a tie for fifth and only two shots off the lead. Monty needs to finish in the top five to qualify for The Open.

World No1 Luke Donald also recovered from a shaky start to finish tied with Monty on five under.

Some of the big names are showing that they can peak at the right time.

US Open champion Rory McIlroy is not playing at the Caslte Stuart links and is instead practising at Royal St George’s. The young Irish star has been taking it easy since his win although it looksd like he is back, hard at work as The Open nears.
