Donald wins at Wentworth to become world number one

Luke Donald defeated Lee Westwood on the first play-off hole to win the BMW PGA Championship and become world number one.

Donald had started the week with a fantastic 64 to take control of the tournament, but failed to match that form for the rest of the week, with his driving, in particular, letting him down.

Westwood closed the gap every day with rounds of 72-69-68-68 to force a play-off on -6. It was the dream showdown with the winner guaranteed the top spot in the world rankings.

Donald birdied as Westwood found the water with his third shot on the controversial 18th hole.

Simon Dyson finished third on -4 and Colin Montgomerie finished -1 for his first top 10 in 35 months.
