wentworth day 2 starting

The early starters are already out on the course at Wentworth as the seond day of the European Tour’s flagship event gets under way.

Ian Poulter is one of the early starters and will be hoping to close the gap on fellow countryman Luke Donald. Poulter shot a solid three-under-par 68 in his opening round and will be hoping to close in on another European Tour title.

But Donald is the man of the moment and sits atop the leaderboard on an incredible seven under. He tees of at lunchtime today (Friday) and will be hoping for a repeat of his opening round. He claimed it was ‘one of the best rounds I have ever played.’

In difficult conditions Donald [played impeccably to close in on anothe rtitle and the World Number One spot. Donald has been incredibly consistent over the last two years. In 2011 alone he has finsihed in the top 10 seven times from eight starts on the PGA Tour in America and he won the World Accenture Matchplay in February.

He came close at The Masters – with a strong 4th-placed finish – and he narrowly missed out last weekend whenIan Poulter beat him in the final of the Volvo World Matchplay in Spain.

If Donald beats Lee Westwood at Wentworth and Martin Kaymer fails to finish in the top 10, Donald will take over at the top of the world rankings – for the first time in his career.

But there’s a few great players not far behind and the young Italian, Matteo Manassero also looks determined to make a charge.

The 18-year-old shot a stunning 66 yesterday (Thursday) and shows no sign of nerves as he chases his thirs European Tour title.
