Fantasy Golf: Wells Fargo Championship preview

Published:

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel, heads back across the pond this week for the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour.

Many big names are making their first appearances since The Masters and they will be faced with a very tough test at Quail Hollow, which has long been one of the toughest par-72s on Tour.

Birdies will not be flowing this week so patience will be important and the ability to scramble and save par is vital. The course can be stretched to nearly 7,500 yards so long hitting is an added bonus.

Five of the world’s top 10 players are teeing it up and there’s a lot of depth in the field so managers face some very interesting decisions this week.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for the Wells Fargo Championship:

Lee Westwood, $5.0m
The Englishman won against a weak field in the Indonesian Masters last week. He currently leads the PGA Tour for greens in regulation and has four other top 4s this season, including T3 at The Masters.

Phil Mickelson, $3.6m
Lefty was runner-up here in 2010 and T9 last year. He’s 2nd on Tour for bogey avoidance and also finished T3 in his last start at The Masters.

Jim Furyk, $2.4m
A run of T2-T11-11-T8 has fired him back into the world’s top 50. Another win seems on the horizon and he has a good record in this event.

Zach Johnson, $1.9m
He’s quietly notched five top 20s this season, including runner-up a couple of weeks ago at The Heritage. Finished T6 at Quail Hollow last year.

Jeff Overton, $1.3m
The Ryder Cupper’s regained his fantastic putting form, resulting in five top 20s in his last seven starts.

Cameron Tringale, $0.8m
The 24-year-old has really built on a solid rookie PGA Tour season last year, where he finished 63rd in the FedEx Cup standings. He’s up to 36th this year thanks to successive top 10s in his last three starts.
