Garcia Victory Helps Seal Ryder Cup Spot

Sergio Garcia fired four birdies in five holes in a closing round of 66 to win the Wyndham Championship and seal his place in the 2012 Ryder Cup team.

Garcia’s victory at Sedgefield Country Club was his first on the US PGA Tour in more than four years and means that Ian Poulter has been knocked out of the automatic qualification spots. However, the Englishman is still widely tipped to gain a captain’s pick ahead of Padraig Harrington and one of Nicolas Colsaerts or Martin Kaymer.

Garcia’s victory in North Carolina means all the more after he missed the Ryder Cup in 2010 as a non-playing vice-captain under Colin Montgomerie. “It’s great,” Garcia said after moving up to 17th in the world rankings. “I hit some really good shots and made some nice four- or five-footers when I had to. I’m very happy about the way the week has gone.

“Sometimes it hurts to hear people not giving enough credit to some of those other wins because they’re in Europe. Fortunately, I know how much they mean to me and I know how difficult they are so, you know, they were great and they really helped a lot.”

Nine of Europe’s automatic places for the meeting with the United States at Medinah are now secured, leaving one to fight for. A tied seventh place at the Wyndham for Colsaerts leaves Kaymer in a vulnerable position; the German currently occupies the last automatic berth in the European standings and unlike Colsaerts, will not feature at this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
