Nick Watney captures The Barclays to improve Ryder Cup hopes

American Nick Watney increased his chances of making Davis Love’s Ryder Cup team after coming from behind to win The Barclay’s on Sunday.

The 31-year-old is battling for one of four wildcard picks for the event in September alongside Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker.

Watney’s victory was helped by Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who missed the chance to win back-to-back titles on the PGA Tour after blowing his overnight lead.

Garcia, who won at the Wyndham Championship last week, shot a final round 75 to finish joint third, four shots behind Watney.

In addition to Garcia, three other members of Europe’s Ryder Cup team showed promising form at the Barclays ahead of the Ryder Cup.

Lee Westwood held onto a share of fifth place after a closing 70, while Luke Donald claimed 10th with the same final round score. US PGA champion Rory McIlroy continued his recent run of form and finished in 24th.

Padraig Harrington, who led the field after a first-round 64, finished with a 68 to finish tied for 19th; but his chances of a Captain’s pick for the European side were ruined by back-to-back 75s on Friday and Saturday.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both had days to forget, shooting a pair of 76s to fall outside the top 30.
