Snedeker succeeds over faultering Stanley

Kyle Stanley blew a three-shot lead on the final hole to eventually lose out to Brandt Snedeker in a play-off at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

On the 72nd hole, Stanley spun a wedge for his third shot back off the front of the green and into the water. He then pitched on to the green for his fifth and three-putted for a triple bogey to finish on 16-under par, tied with Snedeker.

Snedeker birdied the final hole to shoot 67 and gain the clubhouse lead, telling reporters afterwards he thought the title was was out of reach: “I just was too far back. Kyle had too big a lead,”

Stanley had accumulated a seven-shot lead after birdieing the opening two holes of the final round, but bogeyed 11 and 12 and then had a horror at the last to take the event into a playoff. After both players birdied the first playoff hole, Stanley missed a four-foot par putt at the next to lose.

“It’s just crazy,” Snedeker said. “To get my mind around what happened the last 30 minutes is pretty hard to do right now. My heart is out to Kyle. I feel bad for him to have to go through this. I hope he does not beat himself up too much.”

Stanley, on the other hand, was in tears. “I’m kind of in shock right now,” he said. “It’s not a hard golf hole. I could probably play it a thousand times and never make an 8.”
